    An invitation to grieve: reconsidering critical incident responses by support teams in the school setting

    This paper proposes that consideration could be given to an invitational intervention rather than an expectational intervention when support personnel respond to a critical incident in schools. Intuitively many practitioners know that it is necessary for guidance/counselling personnel to intervene in schools in and following times of trauma. Most educational authorities in Australia have mandated the formulation of a critical incident intervention plan. This paper defines the term critical incident and then outlines current intervention processes, discussing the efficacy of debriefing interventions. Recent literature suggests that even though it is accepted that a planned intervention is necessary, there is scant evidence as to the effectiveness of debriefing interventions in stemming later symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder. The authors of this paper advocate for an expressive therapy intervention that is invitational rather than expectational, arguing that not all people respond to trauma in the same way and to expect that they will need to recall and retell what has happened is most likely a dangerous assumption. A model of invitation using Howard Gardner’s (1983) multiple intelligences is proposed so that students are invited to grieve and understand emotionally what is happening to them following a critical incident

    A novel approach to improving the reliability of manual semen analysis: a paradigm shift in the workup of infertile men.

    Conventional semen analysis (SA) is an essential component of the male infertility workup, but requires laboratories to rigorously train and monitor technicians as well as regularly perform quality assurance assessments. Without such measures there is room for error and, consequently, unreliable results. Furthermore, clinicians often rely heavily on SA results when making diagnostic and treatment decisions, however conventional SA is only a surrogate marker of male fecundity and does not guarantee fertility. Considering these challenges, the last several decades have seen the development of many advances in SA methodology, including tests for sperm DNA fragmentation, acrosome reaction, and capacitation. While these new diagnostic tests have improved the scope of information available to clinicians, they are expensive, time-consuming, and require specialized training. The latest advance in laboratory diagnostics is the measurement of seminal oxidation-reduction potential (ORP). The measurement of ORP in an easy, reproducible manner using a new tool called the Male Infertility Oxidative Stress System (MiOXSYS) has demonstrated ORP's potential as a feasible adjunct test to conventional SA. Additionally, the measurement of ORP by this device has been shown to be predictive of both poor semen quality and male infertility. Assessing ORP is a novel approach to both validating manual SA results and identifying patients who may benefit from treatment of male oxidative stress infertility

    Magnetic Collimation in PNe

    Recent studies have focused on the the role of initially weak toroidal magnetic fields embedded in a stellar wind as the agent for collimation in planetary nebulae. In these models the wind is assumed to be permeated by a helical magnetic field in which the poloidal component falls off faster than the toroidal component. The collimation only occurs after the wind is shocked at large distances from the stellar source. In this paper we re-examine assumptions built into this ``Magnetized Wind Blown Bubble'' (MWBB) model. We show that a self-consistent study of the model leads to a large parameter regime where the wind is self-collimated before the shock wave is encountered. We also explore the relation between winds in the MWBB model and those which are produced via magneto-centrifugal processes. We conclude that a more detailed examination of the role of self-collimation is needed in the context of PNe studies

    Disks around massive young stellar objects: are they common?

    We present K-band polarimetric images of several massive young stellar objects at resolutions \sim 0.1-0.5 arcsec. The polarization vectors around these sources are nearly centro-symmetric, indicating they are dominating the illumination of each field. Three out of the four sources show elongated low-polarization structures passing through the centers, suggesting the presence of polarization disks. These structures and their surrounding reflection nebulae make up bipolar outflow/disk systems, supporting the collapse/accretion scenario as their low-mass siblings. In particular, S140 IRS1 show well defined outflow cavity walls and a polarization disk which matches the direction of previously observed equatorial disk wind, thus confirming the polarization disk is actually the circumstellar disk. To date, a dozen massive protostellar objects show evidence for the existence of disks; our work add additional samples around MYSOs equivalent to early B-type stars.Comment: 9 pages, including 2 figures, 1 table, to appear on ApJ

    Unusual magnetic-field dependence of partially frustrated triangular ordering in manganese tricyanomethanide

    Manganese tricyanomethanide, Mn[C(CN)3]2, consists of two interpenetrating three-dimensional rutile-like networks. In each network, the tridentate C(CN)3- anion gives rise to superexchange interactions between the Mn2+ ions (S=5/2) that can be mapped onto the "row model" for partially frustrated triangular magnets. We present heat capacity measurements that reveal a phase transition at T_N = 1.18K, indicative of magnetic ordering. The zero-field magnetically ordered structure was solved from neutron powder diffraction data taken between 0.04 and 1.2 K. It consists of an incommensurate spiral with a temperature independent propagation vector Q=(2Q 0 0)=(+/-0.622 0 0), where different signs relate to the two different networks. This corresponds to (+/-0.311 +/-0.311 0) in a quasi-hexagonal representation. The ordered moment mu=3.3mu_B is about 2/3 of the full Mn2+ moment. From the values of T_N and Q, the exchange parameters J/k = 0.15 K and J'/J = 0.749 are estimated. The magnetic-field dependence of the intensity of the Bragg reflection, measured for external fields H||Q, indicates the presence of three different magnetic phases. We associate them with the incommensurate spiral (H < 13.5 kOe), an intermediate phase (13.5 kOe 16 kOe) proposed for related compounds. For increasing fields, Q continuously approaches the value 1/3, corresponding to the commensurate magnetic structure of the fully frustrated triangular lattice. This value is reached at H_c = 19 kOe. At this point, the field-dependence reverses and Q adopts a value of 0.327 at 26 kOe, the highest field applied in the experiment. Except for H_c, the magnetic ordering is incommensurate in all three magnetic phases of Mn[C(CN)3]2.Comment: accepted for publication in J. Phys.: Condens. Matte

    Visual Thinking Process and Emotions Through Expressive Art

    Background: Drawing has a therapeutic function in the lives of people with special needs.These people need additional support for communication and learning.Researchers believed that drawing is an effective way for these people to show their self-esteem, emotions, social competence, and other hidden personalities. Art therapy teaches knowledge of visual art (drawing and painting). It is also known as expressive art because it assists in dealing with some emotions that are difficult for verbal communication. Furthermore, art therapy is beneficial for fine motor skill development. The aim of this study was to explore the use of expressive art in a group of autistic people. Subjects and Method: This was a qualitative study. A series of art therapy workshop were conducted in University of Malaya in collaboration with Malaysian Rehabilitation Council, and Maybank Foundation. A number of 18 people aged 8-17 years old with autism from Malaysian Rehabilitation Council were invited to University of Malaya for the art therapy workshop. They consisted of Malays, Chinese, and Indians. These peoplehad some level of communication problems. Art therapy workshop was conducted twice a month for 6 month with each session lasted for 4 hours. Art template, art materials, and a list of activities were given to each participant. Before the session, the participants informed the researchers verbally the scope of art that they would be drawing. The researchers observed the thinking process and emotions of the participants through the art activities. Results: Some of the art work was not related to what they have mentioned earlier. We found that art demonstrated their thought process. Drawing was more accurate in visualizing their thinking process rather than verbal communication. Besides, we detected a range of emotions illustrated from their final art work. Some of the emotions were psychological distress, happiness, and sadness.     Detecting axion dark matter beyond the magnetoquasistatic approximation

    A number of proposals have been put forward for detecting axion dark matter (DM) with grand unification scale decay constants that rely on the conversion of coherent DM axions to oscillating magnetic fields in the presence of static, laboratory magnetic fields. Crucially, such experiments \unicode{x2013} including ABRACADABRA \unicode{x2013} have to-date worked in the limit that the axion Compton wavelength is larger than the size of the experiment, which allows one to take a magnetoquasistatic (MQS) approach to modeling the axion signal. We use finite element methods to solve the coupled axion-electromagnetism equations of motion without assuming the MQS approximation. We show that the MQS approximation becomes a poor approximation at frequencies two orders of magnitude lower than the naive MQS limit. Radiation losses diminish the quality factor of an otherwise high-QQ resonant readout circuit, though this may be mitigated through shielding and minimizing lossy materials. Additionally, self-resonances associated with the detector geometry change the reactive properties of the pickup system, leading to two generic features beyond MQS: there are frequencies that require an inductive rather than capacitive tuning to maintain resonance, and the detector itself becomes a multi-pole resonator at high frequencies. Accounting for these features, competitive sensitivity to the axion-photon coupling may be extended well beyond the naive MQS limit.Comment: 6+5 pages, 3+9 figure

    Mechanisms of decoherence in weakly anisotropic molecular magnets

    Decoherence mechanisms in crystals of weakly anisotropic magnetic molecules, such as V15, are studied. We show that an important decohering factor is the rapid thermal fluctuation of dipolar interactions between magnetic molecules. A model is proposed to describe the influence of this source of decoherence. Based on the exact solution of this model, we show that at relatively high temperatures, about 0.5 K, the quantum coherence in a V15 molecule is not suppressed, and, in principle, can be detected experimentally. Therefore, these molecules may be suitable prototype systems for study of physical processes taking place in quantum computers.Comment: 4 pages RevTeX, 1 figure (PostScript
